Sarasota bird watching is a real treat. Aside from being home to many of Florida’s native species, from herons to hummingbirds, it’s also a popular layover for a wide variety of migrating species. Our Sarasota vacation rentals give you prime access to some of the best bird-watching opportunities in the area.
Due to the rich diversity of different species, bird watching ranks pretty high on the list of best things to do in Sarasota. Sarasota’s plentiful vacation rentals are well integrated with nature and allow vacationers to enjoy much of the local wildlife without even leaving their accommodations.
For the adventurous birder, here are some of the best places to admire the beautiful birds of Sarasota.
Celery Fields
This publicly owned land was initially established to help control flooding and now boasts well over 200 species of birds, including the roseate spoonbill, kingfisher, and even bald eagles. There are over 400 acres of forested wetland across relatively flat terrain, aside from the impressive 65-foot observation mound. They have hundreds of feet of boardwalk that give you an incredible view of the open ponds, should you hope to spot the majestic black-crowned night heron. Visitors are not restricted to simply observing the wildlife; they can also fish, bike, or kayak through the marsh. The Celery Fields are easily accessible, free, and open year-round from 6 AM to midnight. Bird walks are offered on the last Monday of the month from October to March, and bird enthusiasts of all ages are welcome.
Lido Beach
Another great place to take in the sites is Lido Beach. Known for its sea turtles, it is also known to contain over 200 species of bird. When visiting, you can spot such shore birds as the marbled godwit, black skimmer, and woodland-dwelling varieties of orioles and thrush. On the last Saturday of every month, visitors can pay to attend an event called “Beach walks and bird talks, where naturalist Shaun Swartz can take a group of up to 40 on a guided tour of the beach’s flora and fauna. The tour begins at 7:00 AM, but you know what they say about the early bird. Be sure to bring sunscreen and come ready to get wet. Tickets run between $35 and $45, but entry to the beaches themselves is free.
Myakka River State Park
Birders with limited mobility are in luck with Myakka River State Park. Guests can see soaring eagles and osprey from the comfort of a car. While the most intrepid and able-bodied of birders can traverse the canopy walkway, a long wooden suspension bridge allows you your very own bird’s eye view. With miles and miles of Florida’s dry prairie to explore, one day might not be enough to see it all. Fortunately, there are multiple campsites available throughout. Like our previous two options, this park is also publicly owned and, therefore, free to access. The park occasionally closes because of flooding, so it pays to call ahead and keep an eye on the weather before your trip.
